Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Steppers.
Getting Started
How does Steppers track my steps?
Steppers syncs directly with Apple Health to read your step data. This means your steps are automatically tracked by your iPhone or Apple Watch, and Steppers pulls this data in real-time. No manual input required!
Do I need an Apple Watch to use Steppers?
No! Your iPhone tracks steps on its own using the built-in motion sensors. An Apple Watch will provide more accurate tracking, but it's not required to use Steppers.
Is Steppers free to use?
Yes! Steppers is completely free to download and use. All core features including step tracking, leaderboards, 1v1 battles, streaks, achievements, daily quests, food tracking, and workouts are available at no cost. We also offer Steppers+ with optional premium features like advanced health analytics and custom app icons for those who want even more.
Features
How do I add friends?
You can add friends by sharing your unique QR code or username. Just tap the add friend button, and either scan their QR code or search for their username. You can also share a direct link that opens right to your profile.
How do 1v1 battles work?
Challenge any friend to a step battle! Choose between a 30-minute or 1-hour showdown. Once your friend accepts, both of your steps are tracked from that moment. Whoever has more steps when the timer ends wins. Track progress in real-time with Live Activities on your Lock Screen!
What happens if I miss a day on my streak?
If you don't hit your daily step goal, your streak resets to 0. But don't worry — just start walking again and you'll build it back up! The key is consistency, and every day is a new opportunity.
What are "overtakes"?
An overtake happens when you pass a friend's step count for the day. If your friend had more steps than you in the morning, but you catch up and surpass them by evening, that's an overtake! It's a fun way to track your competitive progress throughout the day.
What are daily quests?
Daily quests are fun challenges that refresh every day at 5 AM Eastern. You get 4 quests each day covering different activities: step goals, active minutes, distance walked, battles, and more. Complete quests to earn XP and level up! Each quest has different rewards based on difficulty.
What is STEPPED?
STEPPED is your weekly activity recap — think of it like Spotify Wrapped, but for your steps! It shows your total steps, daily average, best day, streak, battles won, and achievements earned over the past week, all in a shareable card. Find it on your Profile page and share it with friends!
What are pinned badges?
You can pin up to 3 of your unlocked achievements to display on your profile as badges. They show up on your profile for friends and other users to see. Go to Profile > Settings > Pinned Badges to choose which achievements to show off!
How does the level and XP system work?
Every time you complete a daily quest, you earn XP. As you accumulate XP, you level up! Your current level and XP progress bar are displayed on your profile. Each level requires more XP than the last, so keep completing quests to climb higher.
What is the head-to-head comparison?
When you view a friend's profile, you'll see a head-to-head comparison card showing your stats side-by-side — today's steps, streak, total steps, battle record, and achievements. It's a fun way to see how you stack up against your friends!
Can I set a custom active minutes goal?
Yes! Tap the Active Minutes card on the home screen, then tap the goal label to open the goal adjustment sheet. You can set your daily active minutes goal anywhere from 5 to 120 minutes in increments of 5. Your goal syncs across devices.
How do achievements work?
Steppers has 100 achievements to unlock across categories like Steps, Streaks, Social, Battles, Quests, and more. Achievements are automatically tracked — just keep walking, competing, and engaging with the app. You'll get a custom in-app notification banner whenever you unlock a new achievement!
What battle durations are available?
You can challenge friends to a 30-minute or 1-hour step battle. Pick 30 minutes for a quick burst of competition, or go for the full hour if you want a longer showdown!
How does food tracking work?
Steppers makes logging meals easy with barcode scanning and nutrition label recognition. Just scan a barcode or point your camera at a nutrition label to instantly log the food. You can also search and add foods manually. Track your daily calories, protein, carbs, and fat to stay on top of your nutrition goals.
What is the Cal Report?
The Cal Report is your shareable daily nutrition summary — like a receipt for your eating. It shows your total calories, macros (protein, carbs, fat), and a breakdown of everything you logged that day in a clean, shareable card format. Find it in the Foods tab and share it with friends!
Can I track workouts in Steppers?
Yes! Steppers now includes full workout tracking. Log exercises with sets, reps, and weights, build custom workout routines, and track your progress over time. It's all integrated alongside your step tracking so you can see your complete fitness picture in one app.
What health analytics are available?
Steppers provides advanced health analytics including weight and BMI tracking, active hours and distance trends, and weekly health reports. View beautiful charts that show your progress over time and get insights into your fitness journey. Available to all users with even more detail for Steppers+ subscribers.
Live Activities & Widgets
What is the Step Goal Live Activity?
The Step Goal Live Activity shows your daily step progress right on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island (on supported iPhones). You can see your current steps, goal progress, and streak without opening the app. Enable it in Settings under "Live Activity."
How do I enable the Live Activity?
Go to your Profile, tap the Settings gear icon, and look for the "Live Activity" section. Toggle on "Step Goal Tracker" to start showing your progress on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. You can turn it off anytime from the same menu.
What widgets are available?
Steppers offers several Home Screen widgets: a step counter with daily progress, activity rings showing steps/overtakes/quests, a friends leaderboard widget, and a daily quests widget. Long-press your Home Screen, tap the + button, and search for "Steppers" to add them.
Does the Live Activity work during battles?
Yes! When you're in an active 1v1 battle, you'll see a special Battle Live Activity showing your steps vs your opponent's, the time remaining, and who's currently winning. It updates in real-time so you always know where you stand.
Notifications
What notifications will I receive?
Steppers keeps you engaged with notifications for: battle requests and results, friend requests, achievement unlocks, quest completions, streak milestones, and daily goal achievements. When the app is open, you'll see beautiful custom in-app banners instead of system notifications.
What are in-app notification banners?
When you're using Steppers, achievements, quest completions, and other events trigger stylish custom banners that slide down from the top of the screen. They feature colorful gradients, icons, and can be dismissed by swiping up or tapping. It's a more immersive way to celebrate your wins!
Will I get notified about streak milestones?
Absolutely! You'll get special notifications when you hit streak milestones like 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, 30, 50, 100, and even 365 days. These come with a flame animation to celebrate your consistency. Keep that streak going!
Rings & Groups
What are Rings?
Rings are group walking communities in Steppers. Create a Ring for your friend group, family, coworkers, or anyone you want to walk with. Each Ring has its own leaderboard, group streak, and activity feed. It's a great way to stay motivated together!
How do I create or join a Ring?
To create a Ring, go to the Social tab and tap "Create Ring." Give it a name, choose an emoji, and set it as open or invite-only. To join, you'll need a 6-character invite code from the Ring leader. Open Rings can also be joined directly.
What are Ring Wars?
Ring Wars are competitive challenges between Rings. Ring leaders and co-leaders can create challenges that pit their Ring against others. Members compete by walking, and the Ring with the most combined steps wins. It's a great way to bring group rivalry and team spirit to your walking!
What are Ring roles?
Rings have three roles: Leader (the creator who can manage everything), Co-Leader (can invite and manage members), and Member (participates in the group). Leaders can promote members to Co-Leader or remove members from the Ring.
Motivators
What are Motivators?
Motivators are AI-simulated walking companions that appear on your leaderboard alongside real friends. They have different motivation levels (low, medium, high) and generate realistic step patterns to give you something to compete against, even when your friends aren't active.
Can I turn Motivators on or off?
Yes! You can enable or disable individual Motivators from the Motivators tab. Toggle them on to add competition to your leaderboard, or turn them off if you only want to see real friends.
Can I battle a Motivator?
Yes! You can challenge Motivators to 1v1 step battles just like you would a real friend. It's a great way to practice and stay competitive when your friends are busy.
Privacy & Data
Is my step data private?
Your step data is only shared with friends you've added. We take privacy seriously — you control who can see your activity. You can read our full Privacy Policy for more details on how we handle your data.
Can I control who sees my profile information?
Yes! Go to Profile > Settings > Privacy to control what non-friends can see. You can toggle visibility for your step count, streak, battle record, and achievements individually. Friends can always see everything on your profile.
Can I delete my account?
Yes! You can delete your account at any time from the Settings page in the app. This will permanently remove all your data including step history, friends, battles, and streaks.
Troubleshooting
My steps aren't updating. What should I do?
First, make sure Steppers has permission to access Apple Health. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Steppers and ensure "Steps" is enabled. If it's already enabled, try pulling down to refresh on the home screen, or close and reopen the app.
